In the book 1Q84, the author mentions 5 movies. At first, I wasn’t sure what to do with the information. The previous books I read and written about mention movies, music, or books, but I just ignore it. So with book, I decided to spend some time writing on these three topics. It helps that the book lists a substantial about worth writing about.
The Getaway
Released in 1972 and starring Steve McQueen, it is based on the 1958 novel of the same name. The story is about Carter “Doc” McCoy who is release from prison after making a deal with a Jack Beynon (a corrupt businessman) to rob a bank. For more of the story, go here.
This movie isn’t my typically style, but I am a little intrigued. I want to know what happens.
Fantastic Voyage
Release in 1966, this plot has both the US and Russia developing technology to miniaturized matter, but having it only last an hour. Dr. Benes discovers how to do it indefinitely and with the help of the US, he escapes but an assassination attempt leaves him comatose. Anyways, these doctor shrink to go inside his body to remove a clot. It reminds me of the episode of Rugrats where they go inside Chuckie’s body. After the movie was release, Issac Assimov asked to assist in writing the novel.
Because it was made in the 1960s, I’m going to assume it’s not the best theatrically. But this film would be an interesting remake with all the technology that we have now. It seems like Guillermo del Toro is going to remake the movie.
On the Beach
Based on Nevil Shute’s 1957 Novel of the same name, On the Beach is a 1959 American post-apocalyptic science fiction drama about the aftermath of a nuclear war. After reading the whole plot on Wikipedia, I feel like this is a depressing film. I think this film is also a warning to humans if we don’t be careful.
The Collector
There happens to be several films titled The Collector and so I picked the one that is made around the same time area. The 1965 film is a psychological crime/thriller based on the 1963 novel with the same name. Fredrick is a lonely man who stalk Miranda until one day, her kidnaps her and keeps her in a cellar. Miranda tries to find ways to convince him to let her go.
This bothers me because I watch a movie/show that is similar, but I can’t remember what it is.
2001: A Space Odyssey
Here is another movie released in the same period. 2001: A Space Odyssey is a 1968 science fiction film. A novel was written at the time of its release. A United States aircraft is headed for Jupiter with pilots and scientists. The ship is controlled by a computer called Hal 9000. After reading the plot, this seems like an intense movie.
After writing about these movies, I realized a common them from the era. All these movies have corresponding book. Some were written a few years before, some were written with the movie, and some were written after. I just think it’s an interesting trend. Another trend is how depressing these film are–why does everyone die?! I think the purpose of them is to make you think.
Which movie seems most interesting to you?
