Drama Inspired Recipe: Bua Loy Recipe

In the Thai drama You’re My Destiny (2017), bua loy is the food that Nid craves during her pregnancy. Being a good husband, Pawut takes her to her hometown just so they can eat the bua loy that they made. Despite it being a confusing looking process with many ingredients, I decided to make some of my own.

Bua Loy

Bua loy is a Thai dessert that is typically made with glutinous rice flour (my enemy), coconut milk, and sugar. It is usually eaten for parties and religious ceremonies. This dessert has been around since ancient times.

I didn’t exactly made the recipe like that drama and now that I reflect on it, I should have. But the reason I didn’t was because I wasn’t sure how bua loy was made. I needed to have the basic procedure. So here’s the video that I watched in order to make bua loy.

Changes in ingredients

So this recipe is a pretty tradition recipe with traditional flavor. Instead I decided to make mine with ingredients more familiar to me. I went with the fruits I had in my fridge which are strawberry, kiwi, and mango.

Afterthoughts/ Reflections

The broth was amazing. But the actual balls–disgusting. I really don’t know how to work with glutinous rice flour. Every time I do (and it’s a main ingredient), it is always disastrous. I think the probably was the switching of the flavor. The mistake must come from that. I think the ingredients in the video are much stronger flavors. I want to attempt to make this one again with my flavors. I just need to learn to make the rice flour actually delicious.

Have you ever worked with rice flour?
