It has certainly been a while since I have been inspired to do a craft around here. I particularly don’t like crafts because they require a purchase of things I don’t have and I might be doing something I don’t like very much. Inspiration for the apron hails from none other than Kotoko from Mischievous Kiss: Love in Tokyo. She is seen wearing the apron throughout the show and so I thought I have to make it.
The Process
To make an apron sans pattern is difficult. It took a series of various YouTube videos combine to create the look I wanted for my apron. I have to say that I’m extremely proud of myself and the work I done to create this.
The process took about 4 hours. I watched The Godfather I and a portion of II (for the first time) while I worked. I felt very accomplished, thank you very much.
This first video shows the measurement that I used. I didn’t follow this one completely because I didn’t want to use bias tape for the apron. so I followed it to make the basic layout. I extended each length by 2 inches just to be safe.
For the straps, I used this video. I accidentally made the neck and the waist straps all the same length and width (23 1/2 inches). I added extra length just in case I mess something up.
Materials
- 1 yard of pink fabric with white polka dots
- Tape Measure
- Iron
- Pins
- Chalk
- Sewing Machine
- Pink or white thread
- Bobbin
Instructions
- Fold fabric in half and lay it out on a flat surface. Use the tape measure to measure make the following measurement:
A note about these measurement. I found these measurement to be on the larger side. If you would like the apron to fit more nicely. Use the tape measure to measure yourself and get more exact measurements.
2. Once everything is cut out. Unfold the main apron fabric and turn it wrong side up. Fold the the sides in by 1/2 inch (1.5 cm) to create the hem, iron, and pin. lay the fabric strips flat and face up. Fold in half. Iron and add pins 1/2 inch in. If there is leftover fabric, fold some to make a pocket. I made my 10 inches (25 cm) square. I also folded the hem, ironed, and pinned.
3. Prepare the bobbin and the sewing machine. Start sewing along the the pins, pulling them out as you go. Continue with all the pieces.
4. once everything is sewn, get the 21 inch strap and sew it to the top of the apron to make a neck strap. Then sew the two longer ones where the curve meets the side. Sew it to make the waist/hip straps. Lastly, if you have a pocket, place it one the apron in the middle near the hip strap height and sew around it. And voila, an apron.
There are quite a few mistakes, but this is my first apron and I’m really proud of it. Plus it’s purpose is to keep my clothes clean, so I try not to pay attention to the pocket being a mess.
Afterthoughts
I really enjoyed making the apron. It was so much fun. I would love to work on more sewing projects.
