The Art of the Kabedon

A whirlwind of frustration, an overwhelming flow of romance, and possibly an exchange of words in a possible mutual exchange can lead to a successful kabedon. Kabedon is a word that is new to me, but well-known in the drama, anime, and manga world.

Kabedon is the act of pinning a person to a wall and then fiercely slapping it all in one motion. Kabe is Japanese for ‘wall’ and don is onomatopoeia for the sound the wall makes when it’s being slapped. Its origin hails from shoujo manga. A typical kabedon includes a tsudere man attempting to display dominance, strength and at the same time vulnerability. I guess when I put it like that it sounds like a mating dance.

There are two main varieties of Kabedon…

We have the shonen kabedon, which includes the wall being hit in anger and frustration.

Then there’s the shoujo kabedon which is romantic in nature, caused by feelings of anger, jealous, and/or passion.

Here’s a list of several other types of kabedon.

The articles that I’ve read about kabedon says it is not very common for people to encounter one in real life. But I have actually experienced a real kabedon (I say real because I’m not including it to when my husband does it…don’t judge me–I like kabedon).

The year was 2006, I was a junior in high school and I had a very playful personality. I just loved to play around. But a playful personality can easily translate into flirty with the opposite sex. There was a guy that I enjoyed “flirting” with and one day he chased me down the hall (even though running wasn’t allowed) and when he finally caught me, he put me in a kabedon. A.real.life.kabedon. It is so intense. We just stared into each others eyes. I wasn’t sure what would happen next. And that uncertainty caused me to say, “You’re scaring me.” And so he let me free.

Honestly, I enjoy experiencing kabdeon. I think it’s fun or funny (depending on the mood). I’m not sure how other women would take it though.

What do you think of kabedon? Have you experience it?
